One Button for Everything: Longines' Monopusher Puts the Column Wheel in the Crown
A single pusher, coaxial with the crown, runs the entire chronograph on Longines' new hand-wound L799.5. Start, stop, reset. One button, one column wheel, and 115 years of single-pusher history compressed into 41 millimeters of steel.
Two pushers is the easy way to build a chronograph. One starts, the other stops, a third motion resets. Each control gets its own lever, its own little kingdom inside the movement, and nobody has to compromise, which is exactly why Longines just chose the hard way. Its new Master Collection Chrono Monopusher, released this month, puts the whole chronograph, start, stop, and reset, on a single pusher integrated into the crown.
The question is why anyone would do that on purpose, and the answer is that the hard way is the old way, and the old way is the interesting way.
Single-pusher chronographs were the original wristwatch chronographs, and Longines built its first in 1911, following with the caliber 13.33Z in 1913. Back then there was no room, and frankly no need, for two pushers on a pocket-watch movement squeezed into a wristwatch case. One button did everything, sequentially: press to start, press again to stop, press a third time to reset. The mechanism that makes that sequencing possible is a small marvel of mechanical logic, and Longines has been polishing it for over a century.
The state machine in your crown
Here is what a monopusher actually is, mechanically speaking: a state machine.
Press the button and the column wheel rotates one step. In state one, the operating lever releases the clutch and frees the balance of the chronograph train, and the central seconds hand starts its run. Press again and the wheel rotates to state two: the brake lever falls onto the chronograph wheel, stopping everything cold, and the heart-piece hammers swing into position, ready. Press a third time and those hammers strike the heart-shaped cams on the seconds and minute counters, driving them to zero. Three presses, three states, one cam wheel. Every press is a full rotation cycle divided by logic instead of separate controls.
That elegance has a cost, and it is worth stating plainly. A monopusher cannot stop and resume. On a conventional two-pusher chronograph, you can halt the hands, hold the elapsed time, then start them again to accumulate a second interval on top of the first. A monopusher's second press stops, and the only thing the third press can do is reset. The mechanism has no memory of a pause. If you time consecutive laps, you lose the running total every time you stop. It is a real functional sacrifice, and Longines does not pretend otherwise.
What you get in return is purity of interface. One button. Nothing to misremember under stress.
The crown has two jobs now
Most monopushers mount their single pusher at two o'clock, a separate button above the crown. Longines integrated this one coaxially into the crown itself, at three o'clock. That decision creates a genuine mechanical problem. The crown stem must do two things that interfere with each other: rotate to wind the barrel and set the hands, and transmit a linear push, straight down the stem's own axis, to the chronograph's operating lever.
Solving that without the two motions fighting requires the pusher to ride on a sleeve or hollow stem arrangement where axial movement and rotation are decoupled, so that pressing does not torque the winding works and winding does not nudge the chronograph. It is the kind of detail nobody will ever see and everybody will feel. When the press is mushy, you know the decoupling is wrong. When it clicks like a camera shutter, you know it is right. Longines' century of practice at this exact trick is presumably the reason they attempted it here.
Column wheel and vertical clutch, as it should be
The caliber inside, the L799.5, is Longines-exclusive and derived from the L788 line that powered the brand's earlier monopushers. It is hand-wound, column-wheel operated, and uses a vertical clutch. Each of those choices deserves a sentence.
Hand-wound first. A manual chronograph is thinner and simpler than an automatic one, with no rotor stealing space or obscuring the works. This case is 41 millimeters across and 12.6 millimeters thick, which is honest packaging for a manual column-wheel chronograph with a display back.
The column wheel matters because it is the precise way to orchestrate levers. Cheaper chronographs use a cam-and-lever system, where a shaped cam shoves levers around in a sequence that wears and can be sloppy. A column wheel is a rotating toothed pillar that lifts and drops each lever at exactly the right moment, in exactly the right order. It costs more to make and more to finish, which is why it is blued here and visible through the sapphire back, Geneva stripes above it, perlage below.
The vertical clutch matters because of what happens the instant you press start. In a conventional lateral clutch, an intermediate wheel slides sideways to engage the chronograph train, and the sliding makes the seconds hand jump or stutter as the teeth mesh. A vertical clutch stacks the engagement wheel directly above the driving wheel and presses them together face to face, like two clutch plates in a car. Engagement is instantaneous and the hand starts without a visible jump. For a mechanism whose entire point is measuring time precisely, that first fraction of a second is not cosmetic. It is the whole argument.
Silicon in the balance
The balance spring is silicon. That is no longer exotic, but it is worth noting what it buys here. Silicon is immune to magnetism, needs no lubrication, holds its shape across temperatures, and can be etched into geometries that would be impossible to form in metal. In a hand-wound chronograph with a 68-hour power reserve from a single barrel, isochronism across that long reserve matters: a spring that behaves the same at hour one and hour sixty is what keeps the rate honest. The movement runs at 28,800 beats per hour, the modern standard, and Longines rates the reserve at 68 hours, which covers a long weekend off the wrist with margin to spare.
The doctor's scale
Around the dial's outer edge runs a pulsometer scale. This is my favorite detail on the watch, and it is pure history. Before electronics, a physician timed a patient's pulse with a watch exactly like this: start the chronograph, count thirty beats, stop, and read the heart rate in beats per minute directly off the scale, no arithmetic. The pulsometer turns elapsed seconds into a rate, calibrated for a 30-beat count. Longines was a serious instrument maker for sports and medicine in the early twentieth century, and the scale is a genuine artifact of that era rather than decoration. It belongs on a monopusher the way a tachymeter belongs on a racing chrono.
Speaking of the dial, the center carries a barleycorn, or grain d'orge, pattern, a guilloche of overlapping grain-like motifs cut into the dial, and the recessed subdials get a snailed finish. Both dials, silver opaline and a frosted blue, keep the tracks printed in black for contrast. Hands get a small kink partway along, leaf shading toward sword. These are the details that separate a considered dial from a busy one.
One modern concession
There is exactly one feature here that belongs to the twenty-first century, and it is on the strap. The alligator strap closes with a triple-folding clasp that includes a micro-adjustment, a couple of millimeters of slide via a small pusher on the clasp, for wrists that swell on warm days. Dress watches almost never get this. Sports watches get it because tool-watch people complain loudly. That Longines put it on a 41-millimeter dress chronograph suggests somebody in Saint-Imier actually wears the product and got tired of the strap fitting perfectly in the morning and not at all by four in the afternoon. Respect.
What I do not know
I have not handled this watch. That matters more than usual for a monopusher, because the entire experience of the complication lives in the pusher feel: the travel, the break, the reset snap. A press release can tell you the column wheel is blued. It cannot tell you whether the third press lands with authority or mush. If you try one on, press the button three times and tell me.
I also do not know how the L799.5's single barrel delivers its 68 hours, whether through a longer mainspring, a taller barrel, or a more efficient gear train. Longines has not published the barrel geometry, and 68 hours from one barrel at 4 Hz is a genuinely good number that deserves a technical explanation rather than a marketing one. And the 12.6-millimeter thickness is fine but not thin, which tells you the vertical clutch and the column wheel cost height. Physics always collects.
What I do know is that this is the correct kind of revival. Not a dial color. Not a collaboration. A mechanism, brought back because it is better at being what it is, limitations and all.
