Cobarion, Ti64, and a Brinicle: How Casio Built a $9,500 G-Shock That Acts Like Platinum

Most anniversary watches get a dial color while Casio built a metallurgy lesson, because thirty years after MR-G debuted in 1996 as a titanium and resin hybrid with a digital display, the flagship G-Shock line needed something that actually justified the word flagship.

MRG-BF1000EB-1A lands June 23, 2026 as the 30th anniversary MR-G Frogman with eight hundred pieces at $9,500 as an ISO 200-meter diver with two straps and one Proteca case and a bezel material you cannot scratch with titanium.

Cobarion is a cobalt-chromium alloy four times harder than pure titanium with a platinum-like luster when Sallaz-polished, originally developed for medical implants before Casio borrowed it for bezels, manufactured exclusively by Eiwa Co. Ltd. in Japan with trademark owned by the Iwate Industrial Promotion Center, first used on MRG-B5000 squares and MRG-B2100 octagons where the top bezel alone accounts for that telltale white gleam under harsh store lighting, and now topping a Frogman.

That matters more than marketing usually does, because Frogman is the least jewelry-like G-Shock in the catalog and the most overbuilt. Original DW-6300 Frogman in 1993 was resin, asymmetrical, left-shifted case for wrist clearance, screw-lock back, big frog on the back. Turning that into MR-G meant re-engineering 70-plus exterior components in metal while keeping the O-ring airtight and the shock structure intact.

Ti64 Everywhere, Buffers Where It Counts

Case, crown, buttons, screws, caseback are Ti64. Not pure titanium. Ti-6Al-4V, six percent aluminum, four percent vanadium, the workhorse aerospace alloy with roughly double the tensile strength of Grade 2 pure titanium, better fatigue resistance, higher corrosion resistance in salt water, and a willingness to take a deep-layer hardening process followed by titanium carbide coating that pure titanium shrugs off.

Between those Ti64 bezel parts sits fluoro rubber. Clad Guard Structure, adapted for diving. Protective parts built into crown and buttons absorb impacts to the module. Fluoro rubber buffers between bezel segments provide face-guarding functionality from front and side shocks, plus a seal that helps maintain ISO 200-meter water resistance. Screw-lock crown with airtight construction, and a clever indexing trick that keeps the MR-G logo horizontally aligned when fully locked. You would not notice unless someone told you. Once told you cannot unsee it.

Screw-lock caseback is pure titanium with press-fit sapphire crystal, blue vapor deposition, engraved first-generation Frogman character. Press-fit matters because a conventional gasket-mounted crystal can damp radio reception. The Frogman needs Multiband 6 and Bluetooth, so Casio press-fits the sapphire to keep antenna sensitivity while maintaining airtightness. Blue vapor deposition gives the back its diver-specific depth. Sapphire on the front gets anti-reflective coating inside, Super Illuminator LED behind it.

Brinicles Are Real and Terrifying

Brinicle is a portmanteau of brine plus icicle describing what happens when sea ice forms in polar oceans and expels salt, so that supercooled hypersaline brine sinks because it is denser than surrounding seawater, and as it sinks it freezes the seawater around it into a hollow tube of ice growing downward sometimes meters long, a slow-motion stalactite made of ocean that eventually hits the seafloor and flash-freezes starfish.

Documented rarely and filmed even more rarely because you need calm water under fast ice and a camera crew willing to wait in minus twenty, this phenomenon became Casio's motif with swirling facet cuts on the bezel evoking the brinicle extending in downcurrent while freezing seawater as it goes, which is partly marketing and partly an excuse to give Kazuhito Komatsu a surface to work with.

Komatsu runs Komatsu Cutting Factory and is known for Hana Shinju, faceted pearls cut with diamond-cutting techniques applied to organic material that should not take a facet at all, and as the first Japanese artisan awarded first prize in US-based Gemmy Awards for gem-cutting in 2009 plus Monodzukuri Nippon Grand Award Prime Minister Prize he cuts each MRG-BF1000EB bezel individually with swirling facets at multiple angles that create light play from every wrist turn, before Casio hits it with scratch-resistant blue arc ion plating, a vacuum process that ionizes metal and slams it into the surface at high energy for adhesion far beyond conventional IP, and sets two lab-grown blue sapphire stones with 57-facet round brilliant cuts into screw heads for blue on blue that avoids monochrome.

Seventy exterior components is not flex, it is what happens when you try to make an asymmetrical resin diver in titanium with O-ring sealing, buffers, screw-lock everything, and replaceable straps without looking like a kit car.

Dura Soft, Ti Bracelet, Proteca Box

Strap is Dura Soft fluoro rubber, flexible, stain-resistant, resists discoloration and aging far better than standard silicone. Buckle and keeper Ti64. Quick-swap via side pins while pressing lug underside buttons. Cleaning becomes trivial, which matters after salt water.

Included in the box is the other option, a full titanium bracelet with deep-layer hardening and titanium carbide coating, extendable for wetsuit wear. MR-G bracelets are built link by link, each hardened before assembly, then DLC-coated. Same philosophy as MRG-B2100B bracelet where DAT55G titanium alloy, three times harder than pure titanium from Daido Steel, is used for links and Cobarion for bezel top. For BF1000EB, Ti64 does most of the work, Cobarion does the showpiece.

Presentation case co-developed with Proteca, Japanese high-end luggage brand from Ace Co. Ltd. Proteca knows how to make a hinge that does not sag after five hundred openings, which is more than you can say for most watch boxes that end up in closets after day two.

Module carries a gold-plated retainer plate because MR-G demands it, plus three dual-coil motors for rapid hand movement switching between current time and elapsed dive time without the stutter cheaper ana-digis show, Tough Solar, Bluetooth to CASIO Watches app for tide data at 3,300 locations worldwide with dive log tracking and analysis and dual time across 27 zones and dive mode with high-visibility elapsed time and tide indicator, plus full auto calendar to 2099, hand home position correction, power saving, and accuracy of plus minus 15 seconds per month without radio or phone link that becomes atomic with link.

ISO 200-meter diving water resistance, screw-lock crown, screw-lock back, screw-lock everything that could leak. Fluoro rubber buffers. Gold retainer. Sapphire sandwich. Hand-cut Cobarion. This is the part where you realize Casio still builds G-Shocks like they are going to be abused by someone who actually dives under polar ice and needs to know tide at Rishiri Island at 2 AM.

Why This Exists

MR-G started 1996 as Casio's answer to a question nobody asked out loud: what if G-Shock but made like a Grand Seiko, with Zaratsu-adjacent polishing and materials that belong in surgical suites. Thirty years later the line includes squares, octagons, and now the first full-metal Frogman lineage, because divers are the one G-Shock subculture that never left.

Frogman collectors remember DW-8200, GW-200, GWF-1000, GWF-A1000 analog Frogman. Each moved further from tool to totem. MRG-BF1000R in 2023 was the inflection, premium full-metal titanium Frogman, 70-plus components, asymmetric case preserved in metal, gold-plated retainer, blue vapor deposition frog on back. MRG-BF1000EB takes that foundation and adds anniversary justification to use Cobarion and Komatsu in the same sentence.

$9,500 is a lot for a G-Shock. It is also the only place you get a cobalt-chromium bezel cut by a Gemmy-winning pearl cutter, Ti64 case with fluoro rubber Clad Guard, ISO 200-meter rating with tide graphs for 3,300 spots, two straps including titanium bracelet, Proteca case, and a module that logs dives to your phone while remaining accurate to atomic clocks when it feels like it. No other Frogman does that, because no other Frogman is MR-G.

Limitations? Plenty. Cobarion is hard but brittle compared to titanium, which is why it lives on the bezel top not the whole case. AIP blue can show wear at sharp edges after years of desk diving, though Casio claims scratch resistance improves over standard IP. 800 pieces means aftermarket markup if you hesitate, and 56 by 49.7 by 18.6 millimeter case is not small. That last number matters on smaller wrists. MR-G Frogman wears like armor. Because it is.

For a line that started as an experiment in making the unbreakable watch unbreakably pretty, a brinicle-inspired, Cobarion-topped, Ti64-clad diver with sapphire in its screws feels like the most honest anniversary possible, not a dial color but a metallurgy lesson you can wear over a wetsuit.
